Art and writing seemed to go together so opening an art studio in my building that houses MyWholeFamily.com was a a piece of cake. Now we do even more positive things with the addition of cork recycling.

Here’s a quick video of TV3 Winchester’s coverage of LTD Print.com and King Street Art Works’partnership with Carpet Plus of Charlottesville VA.
The Re-Cork program is making an effort to recycle corks from the valley & surrounding areas.

So make sure to gather up your corks from this seasons parties and family gatherings, then bring them in to our shared space and do your part. We’ll be happy to show you around.

One more way to have a greener art buying center. Thanks Pat King of VAPhotosnline.com for being available for the interview.

Well I’ve learned a lot lately and one thing that amazes me is how easy a household chore seems to be when you are use to doing it and when you haven’t done it for a while. For instance we don’t have kids so we share some of the normal tasks like cleaning the kitchen and doing the laundry. Several months ago I took on the kitchen and Ron Anderson took on the laundry.

Normal stuff any single person would do for themselves and that busy couples share. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that because Ron was now attending Lord Fairfax Community College I would try to take on a some of his share as my schedule freed up. Well I can tell you one thing! Laundry is a lot of work!!! Now the kitchen is too of course and the mess is right in your face if its not kept up…but sorting, washing, moving to the dryer, getting it out, folding it up so a person can come along and wear clean clothes is a “JOB”. Just want to remind all of you who aren’t sharing chores, or those of you who are sharing chores that it would be nice to trade once in a while so you realize how much is being done for you. Thank you Mr. Anderson. Now I’m going to take a nap.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 16, 2010!

It has been my pleasure to be involved with this great organization and when I received this email I knew it had to be shared. Chelsea’s Tree a book for young step children is the book I showcase each year at these events. I’ve attended three in Waynesboro and 1 in Charleston, S.C. and it is always a pleasure to see so many police officers on hand to help with this great undertaking.

Please feel free to contact Mark if you are interested in presenting your books at Book ‘Em this fall or put the date on your calendar for an amazing day of meeting the authors of such a wide range of interesting books.

Charleston S.C. Book 'Em Event 2008

From Mark P. Kearney
7th Annual Book ‘Em literacy event

We started and held our first ever Book ‘Em in October 2004. We had 46 authors in attendance that first year and we had 75 authors one of the years.

We are the first book event of our kind, to my knowledge, to be held and hosted by a police department. And, if I’m correct, we are also the first book event that has a goal of spreading around the world. This is due to our cause.

Our cause is to highlight the connection between illiteracy/poor reading skills and crime rates. Besides our annual Book ‘Em event, which we are working to spread to select locations around the world, I have started about half a dozen literacy programs that I’m working to spread to law enforcement agencies around the world. The proceeds raised from this event are returned to various literacy programs which help to reduce crime and hopefully improve society as a whole. We have a reading program that we started 5 school years ago where police officers go into elementary school classes to read to children. During the year, we’ll read to many classes from Pre-K to 5th grade in the 4 local elementary schools here in Waynesboro.

We have another program where several publishing companies donate books. In turn I have gone into all the English classes for the local 7th graders, 8th graders, 9th graders, 10th graders and 11th graders and gave monthly talks and at each talk each student receives a free book. Over the past several years I’ve passed out over 25,000 books to these students, as well as students in other schools, prisoners at 6 prisons, and many individuals.

I’ve gone into 6 prisons/jails so far to talk to prisoners on how they can help themselves through reading and education. I also donate books to the prison libraries. On my last visit, I was able to give them roughly 500 books. I’ve had individuals released from jail attend Book ‘Em events in the past.

I have other programs I’m working on as well that target “at-risk” teens.

I’m also working with young, elementary school children where I’m giving them free books and I’m also taking groups of them out on nature walks to help promote their love of nature.

Nothing happens overnight, so I hope to continue working on the expansion of Book ‘Em and my literacy programs the rest of my life if I can.

We hope you will consider attending because you can help us to make an even bigger difference in positively shaping the future of our country. Our goal is to improve society through the promotion of literacy. Please let me know if you have any questions at all about our event or our literacy programs.

Drumming with Kester… a new radio interview coming soon on WSVG 790AM and 1230AM. The music is delightful, hypnotic and energizing. The chat is informative and enlightening. And to my surprise Kester had me pounding out a tune in no time even after I had denied having rhythm.

Of course she claimed “Everyone of our generation knows We Will Rock You!” And I did. It was great fun chatting with her. She explained the dynamics of the jimbay drum and its origins and then made the drums wail. Had me dancing in the groove there for a few minutes.

Kester agreed to be the featured musician at my annual Strasburg Mayfest Parade Party that I began when I chaired the parade for a couple of years. It was a great way of enticing people to be in the parade. Serving up some Nathan’s Hot Dogs and having great music has been our gig ever since.

Having lived in Upstate New York until almost the age of 15 I’m not sure these are really winter storms we have here in Virginia. More like a good heavy snow I would say. It can be dangerous of course, even leaving ones home means being careful not to slam the door for fear of… ought oh!

I just heard one of the last really big ice bergs slide down from one level to the next on our metal roof. The snow travels slowly to the edge on a thin layer of water that melts underneath due to the heater being in the attic. All the while the icicles form along the edge, growing longer than on most buildings. Clear and shimmering in the sunlight, they hang on the gutter like crystals on a chandelier. Over days the snow mounds creep to form “glaciers” moving slowly over the edge. They move further and further out supported by a thick layer of ice that hangs over the side by a foot or 2. Hanging there until the weight tips the balance…then too crash to the ground.
